A devastating workplace accident has resulted in a £433,000 fine for a packaging company, highlighting the importance of proper safety measures. On October 31, 2023, a worker, Matthew King, suffered a life-altering injury when a 4.5-ton machine fell on him during a routine task. This incident underscores the critical need for comprehensive safety protocols, especially when dealing with heavy machinery.
King, a 39-year-old employee of Multi Packaging Solutions UK Limited, was working at their East Kilbride site. While attempting to secure a wheel on the underside of the machine, he was struck on the head, resulting in a severe skull fracture, head bruising, and nerve damage to his left face. These injuries have left him with permanent health issues, including double vision, peripheral vision loss, facial palsy, and hearing impairment.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed a shocking lack of safety measures. There was no established system in place to ensure the safety of workers during such operations. The company had attempted an improvisational lifting method using a forklift and skates, but this proved ineffective, as the machine had already slipped off the forks twice before the incident. The HSE report emphasized that moving such a large and heavy machine was not a routine task and required a well-planned, competent approach.
The accident's aftermath has been devastating for King. He is unable to drive, has undergone multiple surgeries, and continues to receive mental health support. The HSE inspector, Ingrid Grueso, emphasized the preventable nature of the accident, stating, 'The company failed to properly plan the lifting operation or implement a safe system of work.' She also highlighted the long-term impact on King's life, including the loss of his independence and the need for his wife to provide transportation for the family.
The company, now part of Smurfit Westrock, pleaded guilty to violating health and safety regulations. They were fined £433,333 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £32,500.
