Artists & Mothers Gala: A Creative Celebration for Families (2025)

A groundbreaking event, the Artists & Mothers Gala, recently took place, and it was an afternoon to remember! Despite being a new initiative, the collective power of its board, featuring the renowned Chloe Sevigny, attracted a crowd of supporters.

The gala, held between 3 and 6 p.m., offered a unique and vibrant experience for families. Kids and their parents engaged in a range of creative activities, from taking adorable family photos in front of Farah Al Qasimi's ivy-covered backdrop to lounging on beanbags and watching Aki Goto videos curated by Maia Ruth Lee. The highlight was Ei Arakawa's massive tile installation, inviting everyone to unleash their creativity, which resulted in a vibrant collage of jungle-themed art.

But here's where it gets controversial... or at least thought-provoking. Alia Razza, the perfumer behind Régime des Fleurs, who gifted everyone with travel-sized fragrances and handprint-shaped cookies, shared her thoughts on the event's underlying message. She highlighted the persistent choice many women face: career or motherhood. While New York may offer a more balanced approach, women elsewhere often feel they must choose. Razza hopes that initiatives like Artists & Mothers will help bridge this gap and provide support for working mothers.

As for the dress code, it was a refreshing change, allowing guests like Rama Diwali, Liana Satenstein, Legacy Russell, and Jane Panetta to express their individuality. The result? A stylish yet relaxed atmosphere, with a diverse range of fashion choices, from wide-leg jeans and maxi skirts to colorful knits paired with comfortable footwear and practical crossbody bags.

The gala also featured an on-site gift shop by City Harvest, offering unique items like Gauchere T-shirts, beanies, and Abby Lloyd's nylon patchwork dolls, ensuring the good vibes continued beyond the event. Snacks provided by SoHo's Happier Grocer kept everyone energized, and the evening concluded with a bubbly dance party led by DJ Cardamami and performances by Sophie Becker, Zeena Perkins, Cecilia Lopez, and Lizzi Bougatsos and Sadie Laska.

Artists & Mothers aims to provide financial support to its recipients, making their lives more manageable as they juggle home and work commitments. In the future, the organization hopes to expand its reach, hire more staff, establish an endowment, and support parents worldwide with children of all ages.

Carissa Rodriguez, a 2024 honoree, shared her vision: "I'd love to see this organization and its artists collaborate on a proposal to ensure all New York City parents with young children receive public support. This should be a universal right."

What are your thoughts on initiatives like Artists & Mothers? Do you think they can make a real difference in supporting working parents? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments!
