Bath Rugby's Journey to the Champions Cup Semi-Final: A Story of Resilience and Inspiration
Bath Rugby's remarkable journey to the Champions Cup semi-final is a testament to the power of understanding one's past and embracing the present. Under the leadership of Johann van Graan, the club has transformed from a team on the brink of relegation to a force to be reckoned with in European rugby.
A Lesson in History and Respect
Van Graan's philosophy revolves around understanding the club's history and respecting its past. Upon joining Bath, he watched a video of the 1998 Champions Cup final, a pivotal moment in the club's history. This game, played against Brive, showcased Bath's resilience and ability to overcome adversity. The inspiration from that match has fueled the team's current success.
"One of the biggest things I’ve learned is you always respect your past, understand the history and the battles fought before," Van Graan said. "We’re so proud of the club that was founded in 1865. But a lesson in life is you’ve got to be in the now. The way I see sport is if you live in the past, you’ll stay in the past. This is a new story. This is our story."
A Humbling Journey from Rock Bottom
Bath's current position is a far cry from their low point in the Gallagher Premiership, where they finished last in 2022. Van Graan's leadership and the team's resilience have been instrumental in their rise. The club has won three trophies since his arrival, a stark contrast to the single trophy won between 1998 and 2024.
"We started at zero, literally last place," Van Graan reflected. "And we’ve fought our way through to where we are now, playing some of the biggest games in world club rugby. We are grateful. A humble group of players are busy writing their own history."
A Champion's Return
The return of Andy Robinson, a former Bath coach, has been a significant factor in the team's success. Robinson, now an assistant coach, brings a wealth of experience and a champion's mindset. His presence has not only impacted Van Graan's life but has also positively influenced the current team.
"Robbo is a champion of a man," Van Graan praised. "I brought him back in and he’s made such a big difference not only to my life, but also that of the current team."
A Focus on the Present and the Future
As Bath prepares for the Champions Cup semi-final against Bordeaux, Van Graan emphasizes the importance of staying focused on the present. The team's success is built on a foundation of understanding their identity and playing style.
"We play rugby with a smile on our face," Van Graan said. "Over the last three years and 10 months we’ve become very comfortable with who we are. We understand how we want to play the game. We are never too high, never too low, we try and get better. Most importantly, we play rugby with a smile on our face."
Embracing the Moment
Bath's journey to the semi-final is a testament to their ability to embrace the moment and take advantage of their opportunities. The club has a rich history, and the current players are writing their own story. Van Graan's leadership and the team's collective effort have transformed Bath into a force to be reckoned with in European rugby.
"Sport is about moments in time," Van Graan concluded. "We have got to take ours."
