Alarm bells are ringing! A South London hospital trust is battling a wave of deceptive online videos that are falsely using their doctors to promote weight loss products. This situation highlights the growing sophistication of AI-generated content and the potential for it to mislead the public.
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has issued a warning about these fraudulent videos circulating on platforms like Facebook and TikTok. The videos deceptively claim that the trust's clinicians are endorsing weight loss products. They often show AI-generated images of doctors seemingly using the products, such as applying weight loss patches, and showcasing weight loss over time. But here's where it gets controversial: these aren't actually their doctors!
The BBC attempted to contact the company and a doctor associated with the products but received no response. Dr. Daghni Rajasingam, the deputy chief medical officer at the Trust, confirmed that staff are actively working to remove the videos. She emphasized that these videos are both fraudulent and misleading.
Dr. Rajasingam pointed out that NHS clinicians would never endorse commercial products like these. She urged the public to seek weight loss advice from trusted NHS sources. "We have to be aware that AI-generated images can be very good," she added, highlighting the need for caution.
Graham Barrows, a financial crime expert and presenter of The Dark Money Files podcast, weighed in, calling the adverts and the social media accounts sharing them "baloney." He explained that the motivation behind these videos is purely financial.
He noted that the advertised product is available on reputable online marketplaces, suggesting that consumers might receive the product if they order it. However, he urged caution, stating that the product is a "natural herbal product." And this is the part most people miss: Barrows believes the real scam is the attempt to persuade people to buy a product that may or may not work. The claims about the doctors and successful dieters are completely fabricated.
Barrows, who advises companies on financial crime, emphasized that scammers are quick to exploit opportunities for profit, especially in the lucrative weight loss market. He shared his investigation of a Facebook profile claiming to belong to one of the doctors promoting the products. Using an image search, he discovered the profile photo originated from a Romanian bank advert.
Furthermore, the advert claimed the weight loss patches were "made in the UK," but the packaging in the video clearly showed the French flag. Another red flag was that the doctor's Facebook profile had about 1,000 followers, all from Vietnam. These details are crucial for identifying fake accounts.
Barrows explained that the sellers are trying to bypass your rational thinking, preying on your desire for easy weight loss. He urged people to do "basic checks" before making any purchases.
