Cannabis use in adolescence linked to higher psychiatric disorder risks
A recent study published in JAMA Health Forum reveals a concerning correlation between adolescent cannabis use and an elevated risk of developing severe psychiatric disorders by young adulthood. The research, conducted by a team from Kaiser Permanente, the Public Health Institute's Getting it Right from the Start, the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Southern California, followed 463,396 adolescents aged 13 to 17 over a decade, until age 26. The findings indicate that past-year cannabis use during adolescence significantly increases the likelihood of psychotic, bipolar, depressive, and anxiety disorders in young adulthood.
The study's longitudinal design is a key strength, as it provides strong evidence that adolescent cannabis exposure may be a risk factor for mental illness. The researchers analyzed electronic health records from routine pediatric visits between 2016 and 2023, revealing that cannabis use often preceded psychiatric diagnoses by 1.7 to 2.3 years. With THC levels in California cannabis flower exceeding 20% and concentrates reaching over 95% THC, the risk of developing psychotic and bipolar disorders, two of the most severe mental health conditions, is doubled for adolescents who use cannabis. Lynn Silver, M.D., program director of the Getting it Right from the Start program, emphasizes the importance of accurate and evidence-based information about the risks of adolescent cannabis use. The study also reveals that cannabis use is more prevalent among adolescents enrolled in Medicaid and those living in socioeconomically deprived neighborhoods, raising concerns about the potential exacerbation of existing mental health disparities as cannabis commercialization expands.
