Bold headline: Cavs players ramping up for a much-needed return, and the timing could shape the closing stretch of the season.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have weathered a season crowded with injuries, but there’s cautious optimism that the hurt will start to heal as they move toward the final 27 games. The spotlight this time shifts to several key contributors who’ve been sidelined: Evan Mobley, Dean Wade, and Max Strus. If they can get back on the court, Cleveland’s dynamic could receive a substantial boost.
Head coach Kenny Atkinson has been clear that the group is progressing well. “All are trending very positive,” he said. “Dean and Evan are trending toward playing tomorrow. They went through a full practice today and looked good.” Those are encouraging signs, especially with Mobley and Wade able to reintroduce a defensive backbone and versatile scoring alongside the newest addition, James Harden.
Mobley and Wade bring high-end defensive value and should mesh well with Harden on offense. There’s potential in developing a cohesive pick-and-roll chemistry between Harden and Mobley, while Wade’s shooting in the corners off Harden’s drive-and-kicks could create efficient scoring opportunities.
As for Strus, the timeline remains uncertain. Atkinson noted that Strus is progressing: “Max is progressing. Did a pretty high-level workout today, no contact still, but he’s starting to ramp up. Don’t get too excited, but he’s doing a lot more, so that’s good news.” Strus has yet to play this season after a foot injury sustained in August, and a January update indicated he would miss at least another month.
Cleveland has missed Strus’s floor-spacing and rapid scoring burst. He’s known as one of the league’s most streaky three-point shooters, contributing some of the Cavaliers’ most memorable games in recent years. Beyond his shooting, Strus provides connective tissue on both ends of the floor and brings a competitive edge that lifts the entire team.
For now, Cavaliers fans can at least anticipate Mobley and Wade returning soon. The team is back from the All-Star break and will host the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow.
And this is the part most people miss: integrating multiple returning players at once often reshapes rotations, lineups, and defensive schemes more than any single reunion. If Mobley, Wade, and Strus come back in quick succession, expect a period of adjustment as the coaching staff reconfigures the offense around Harden and reestablishes defensive rotations. How quickly these pieces click could dictate whether Cleveland finishes strong or settles for incremental gains. Which combination do you think maximizes the Cavs’ ceiling down the stretch: Mobley-Harden pick-and-roll with Wade spacing, or a more versatile lineup that prioritizes pace and protection on the perimeter?
