A recent study has uncovered a surprising link between attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and Alzheimer's disease. The findings, presented at the American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Diseases, suggest that individuals with a history of ADHD may exhibit early biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease as they reach middle age.
The study, conducted by a team of researchers, analyzed data from the Pittsburgh ADHD Longitudinal Study (PALS). This ongoing study follows individuals diagnosed with ADHD in childhood and a control group without ADHD, tracking their cognitive function and blood-based biomarkers over time.
Here's where it gets intriguing: The preliminary results indicate that individuals with ADHD history showed elevated levels of established Alzheimer's disease biomarkers, with more significant differences between the ADHD and control groups than expected at this life stage. Specifically, those with ADHD presented with worse executive function, attention, and processing speed.
Furthermore, blood biomarkers revealed lower levels of A-beta 42 and A-beta 40, and higher levels of p-tau 181 in the ADHD group. These patterns are consistent with an increased burden of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in midlife. Interestingly, while higher markers of neurodegeneration were observed, there were no significant differences in astrocyte reactivity or microglial activation.
According to the researchers, these findings suggest that pathophysiological processes associated with cognitive decline later in life may already be present in individuals with midlife ADHD.
The PALS study aims to enroll 100 participants aged 40 or older to further investigate these preliminary results. The authors emphasize the need for full study enrollment and longitudinal follow-up to confirm the trajectories and underlying mechanisms.
