Florida Legionnaires' Outbreak: 14 Cases Linked to Gym (2026)

A chilling 14 cases of Legionnaires' disease have been reported in central Florida, and the source may be a gym. This outbreak has sparked concern and curiosity, leaving many questions unanswered.

On December 5th, 2025, the Florida Department of Health revealed to State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith that the outbreak was linked to a gym. ABC News affiliate WFTV reported that members of a Crunch Fitness in Ocoee, west of Orlando, were among those affected.

Crunch Fitness has taken action, working closely with the health department to close off certain areas and test their pool and spa systems as a precautionary measure. However, both the Florida Department of Health and Crunch Fitness have not yet responded to ABC News' requests for further comment.

But here's where it gets controversial... Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling Legionella bacteria, which thrive in warm water environments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that these bacteria are naturally found in freshwater but can multiply rapidly in warm temperatures.

The disease itself does not spread from person to person, but outbreaks can occur when the bacteria contaminate a building's water supply. This includes common sources like shower heads, sink faucets, and hot water systems.

And this is the part most people miss... Legionnaires' disease has been on the rise over the past decade, reaching a peak in 2018 with 2.71 cases per 100,000 people. Cases decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic but rebounded in 2021.

While most people recover with antibiotics, those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung conditions are at risk of developing fatal complications. The CDC reports that about one in ten people who contract Legionnaires' disease will die from complications, and this risk is even higher for those in healthcare facilities.

This outbreak in Florida raises important questions about water safety and public health. As we await further updates, let's discuss: What measures do you think should be taken to prevent such outbreaks? Are there any similar incidents you've heard of?
