How 3 Startups Built Million-Dollar Businesses Living Rent-Free in Alabama (2026)

Imagine if a year of free rent could change your life. Well, for three startup founders, it did just that! These entrepreneurs from New York and California took a leap of faith and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where they lived rent-free for a year. But was it all smooth sailing? Let's find out.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

Maurice Landers, CTO of Doctours, a medical tourism company, believes their business wouldn't exist without this unique opportunity. "We'd have had jobs, but we wouldn't be helping people with life-changing medical procedures," he said. Doctours connects individuals with hair loss to affordable overseas hair transplant clinics.

The story began in 2024 when Landers and co-founder Girum Tihtina from New York, and Ruth Young-Loaeza, founder of NEET SHEETS from California, won the Sweet Home Alabama grant. NEET SHEETS offers an innovative solution for making bed-making easier.

The Grant's Impact

The grant, provided by Innovate Alabama, a public-private partnership, and supported by various partners, allowed these entrepreneurs to move to Huntsville and focus on their ventures. The E-Center, an entrepreneurial hub, initiated the grant to boost job growth in Alabama.

"We're attracting entrepreneurs who want to start companies and give Alabama a try," said John Joseph, executive director of The E-Center. This initiative brought 12 out-of-state entrepreneurs to Alabama, primarily in Huntsville and Birmingham.

Freedom to Take Risks

The grant enabled the founders of Doctours to take risks they otherwise couldn't. "We had a safety net, so we could invest in our domain name and focus on building the company full-time," Tihtina explained. And their risk paid off—they won a pitch competition in Huntsville, securing $900,000 in investments.

Similarly, Young-Loaeza's NEET SHEETS won first place in Tuscaloosa, receiving $750,000 in commitments. She credits the grant and her success for her decision to stay in Alabama, where she has since relocated her business headquarters.

A Turning Point

Soon after their arrival, the founders participated in gBeta Huntsville, a business accelerator program. Here's where it gets interesting... Sierra Peña, the project manager, challenged their business approach, and it was a wake-up call. "We weren't treating our customers well, but after that conversation, our bookings skyrocketed," Tihtina recalled.

This turning point led to significant growth for both startups. Doctours now has five full-time employees and four contractors, while NEET SHEETS has expanded its team as well.

The Power of Mentorship

Young-Loaeza attributes her success in pitching to investors to Peña's mentorship. "I was scared to talk to investors, but Sierra's exercises gave me the confidence I needed," she said. Peña, now a managing director at gener8tor, hopes for the grant's relaunch, inspired by the success stories of Doctours and NEET SHEETS.

A Community's Growth

The Sweet Home Alabama grant has become a catalyst for growth in Huntsville. "It's a new dimension to our community's development," said Joanna White, managing director of Apollo Coalition. The program's success has sparked discussions about its renewal or expansion.

But here's where it gets controversial—while the grant has undoubtedly benefited these entrepreneurs, what about the long-term impact on Alabama's economy? Is attracting out-of-state talent the best way to foster local innovation and job growth? Share your thoughts in the comments below. The debate is open!
