Locarno Film Festival 2024: Meet the Juries Featuring Paulina García & Lolita Chammah (2026)

The 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival is set to captivate audiences and critics alike with its diverse jury line-up. This year's festival, taking place from August 5th to 15th, showcases a commitment to discovering fresh talent and addressing pressing social issues through cinema. Among the esteemed jurors are renowned figures who bring a wealth of expertise and perspective to the festival's competitive sections.

One of the key juries is the Concorso Internazionale, presided over by Belgian filmmaker Fabrice Du Welz, known for his unique and provocative films like 'Adoration' and 'The Passion According to Béatrice'. Du Welz is joined by Italian producer Marco Alessi, French actress Lolita Chammah (daughter of Isabelle Huppert), and Chilean actress Paulina García, known for her powerful performances in films like 'Gloria'. This jury brings a blend of creative vision and industry experience to the festival.

The Concorso Cineasti del Presente, dedicated to emerging directors, features a jury comprising Tunisian actress and filmmaker Afef Ben Mahmoud, Czech producer and director Radovan Síbrt, and Italian filmmaker Margherita Spampinato. This jury will play a crucial role in identifying the next wave of cinematic talent.

The Pardi di Domani section, focusing on the filmmakers of the future, is judged by Lebanese director, writer, and actress Mounia Akl, South African producer Steven Markovitz, and Italian director Antonio Piazza. Their collective expertise will help shape the future of cinema by recognizing innovative and promising works.

Additionally, the First Feature jury, honoring the best debut feature at the festival, includes Matthieu Darras, Sung Moon, and Swiss-Peruvian filmmaker Klaudia Reynicke. Their task is to identify and celebrate the most promising new voices in cinema.

One of the festival's unique awards, the Pardo for Change, reflects the festival's commitment to addressing social and environmental issues. Its jury, comprising Gianluca Grossi, Somali-Austrian filmmaker Mo Harawe, and Seta Thakur, will evaluate films that engage with pressing questions of broad social relevance.

Giona A. Nazzaro, the artistic director at Locarno, emphasizes the importance of diverse perspectives and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. The festival's jury selection process, he notes, is a challenging task that ultimately aims to bring out desires and emotions, fostering a rich and dynamic cinematic experience.

As the festival approaches, the anticipation builds, and the diverse jury line-up promises to deliver a captivating and thought-provoking event, leaving a lasting impact on the world of cinema.
