However, after cortisol administration, this grid-like activity became blurred, especially when participants navigated without permanent landmarks.
"Under stress, the brain loses its ability to effectively use its internal navigation maps," explains Dr. Osman Akan, one of the researchers. Interestingly, the study also revealed increased activity in the caudate nucleus after cortisol, suggesting the brain attempts to compensate for the impaired spatial mapping system with alternative strategies.
