The college football world was rocked when Notre Dame, a team with a stellar 10-2 record, was shockingly left out of the 2025 College Football Playoff. But the drama didn't end there. The Fighting Irish then made a bold move: they declined to participate in a bowl game, sparking a flurry of reactions, with many labeling the decision as unsportsmanlike.

Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian weighed in on the controversy, and his perspective is definitely worth noting. He addressed the impact of Notre Dame's choice on college football as a whole. Sarkisian made it clear that the Longhorns, who also missed the playoff cut, never considered skipping their bowl game.
"I don't know about the ripple effect for everybody," Sark said, acknowledging the disappointment of not making the playoffs. "We all have goals and aspirations of winning conference championships and being national champions, at least we do. But I also think that there's an experience factor in all this. There's growth. There's development in all this. There's camaraderie. There's so much that goes into this that sometimes, a bowl game is about celebrating a season and finishing a season the right way."
But here's where it gets controversial... Sarkisian didn't hold back, stating that the current college football system is "flawed" and in need of a serious overhaul. He admitted that the future is uncertain, but for the Longhorns, a bowl game is an opportunity to compete against a strong team and celebrate their season.
He further elaborated, "Where it goes from here, I don't think anybody really knows. The point being I don't know what the effect is gonna be down the road; I just know for us this is an opportunity to play another game against a really good team in a great bowl game, and we're gonna cherish it and we're gonna put our best foot forward and try to go win this game."
Sarkisian emphasized that Texas never considered opting out, and he respects the selection committee's decision, even though the Longhorns were on the playoff bubble, finishing at No. 13. In 2024, they were ranked No. 5 and made it to the semifinal Cotton Bowl. They also made the field in 2023.
And this is the part most people miss... Sarkisian sees the glass as half-full. He acknowledged the disappointment of missing the playoff but emphasized the importance of respecting the selection process.
The Longhorns will be facing Michigan in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on December 31st.
