Thanasi Kokkinakis' Risky Surgery: A Tennis Comeback Story (2026)

Facing a career crossroads, Thanasi Kokkinakis took a monumental gamble, undergoing a groundbreaking surgery that could redefine his tennis journey. For years, Kokkinakis battled a debilitating pectoral muscle injury, a constant shadow over his promising career. He played through the pain for an agonizing four to five years, a testament to his grit and determination. But by the start of the 2025 season, the situation worsened dramatically. After the Australian Open, he was sidelined for the remainder of the year.

This wasn't just any surgery; it was a complex and unprecedented procedure. Surgeons employed an Achilles tendon graft, sourced from a deceased individual, to reconnect Kokkinakis's pectoral muscle to his shoulder. And this is the part most people miss: This type of surgery had never before been performed on a tennis player.

Eleven months post-surgery, the 2022 Adelaide champion is now on the cusp of a comeback, a testament to his resilience and the success of this daring operation.

"The surgery I did, it’s risky. No tennis player has ever done it. A few surgeons didn’t want to do it but I feel like I had to take a chance and bite the bullet if I want to have a crack at the rest of my career," Kokkinakis revealed. "When you speak to surgeons and tennis players, no one has seen this injury or had a surgery like this before in tennis. It’s pretty daunting. I knew I had to have a crack and why not be the first."

But here's where it gets controversial... Kokkinakis's injury was so severe that he could only manage one match per week. The decision to undergo such a risky surgery was driven by his desire to play without limitations. He's now targeting the Brisbane and Adelaide tournaments before the Australian Open, aiming to regain his form and ranking. Currently, he stands at No. 450 in the world.
