The intersection of art and radiology is a captivating concept, revealing a unique perspective on the beauty within medical images. Dr. Harun Yildiz, a radiologist with a passion for art, believes that this fusion can enhance mental well-being and prevent burnout in the medical field.
The Beauty in Medical Images
Dr. Yildiz's journey into the world of radiological illustration began with a simple realization: the ability to draw. From that moment on, he embarked on a path that combined his medical expertise with artistic expression.
"Radiological illustration is an emerging discipline," he explains, "transforming medical imaging data into an aesthetic narrative." Dr. Yildiz's approach is unique, creating new visuals that are scientifically accurate yet artistically original. He describes it as a "radiological writing language," where he reinterprets radiologic concepts, making them more accessible and enjoyable.
But here's where it gets controversial: Dr. Yildiz believes that radiological illustration is distinct from medical illustration, a sub-branch that deserves its own recognition.
A Digital Exhibition and an Unforgettable Experience
Dr. Yildiz's work has primarily been exhibited digitally on social media, a platform he believes contributes to the "democratization of medical knowledge." However, in September 2025, he had the opportunity to showcase his illustrations at an international neuroradiology congress in Istanbul. This event, organized by prestigious societies, was a turning point.
"Seeing my illustrations displayed as true works of art, under gallery lights, was an unforgettable experience," Dr. Yildiz recalls.
A Passion for Pediatric Radiology
Dr. Yildiz's clinical work focuses on pediatric radiology and neuroradiology, a passion that began during his residency. He founded "www.pediatrikradyoloji.com" in 2003, a platform that has since evolved into a social media presence.
"Working with children for over two decades has been a privilege," he says. "I hope to publish my accumulated knowledge one day."
Art as a Mental Outlet
Drawing has become an essential part of Dr. Yildiz's life, a soothing practice that helps him relax and unwind. He believes that his artistic pursuits have taught him to avoid situations that once caused anger or frustration.
"It's a unique state of mind," he describes, "a passion that I can't live without."
Influences and Future Endeavors
Interestingly, Dr. Yildiz doesn't draw inspiration from a specific artist or illustrator, as he feels his work is unique in the field.
"I build my path guided by my emotions, logic, and skills," he says.
While Dr. Yildiz's primary focus has been educational, he has also ventured into the commercial side, creating the brand "radiological de-SIGN." He welcomes collaborations and feedback and is excited about his upcoming lecture on November 20, where he will share his passion with a wider audience.
"Join me on this journey of discovery," he invites. "Let's explore the beauty and value in images together."
