The iconic UK gaming retailer GAME is on the brink of disaster, and this time, it might not recover. With all its standalone stores now closed, the future looks bleak.
Update: It's official. The Game Business, citing VGC, confirms that GAME has shut down its last three standalone stores in the UK as it enters administration. This leaves only the concession stores within Sports Direct and House of Fraser operational. The Managing Director, Nick Arran, has also left the company, marking a significant change in leadership.
GAME's retail presence has drastically shrunk from its peak of over 600 stores in the UK, which included the acquisition and rebranding of GameStation in 2007. Now, only a fraction of that number remains as concession stores. While the website will continue to function, the physical retail experience that GAME once offered is all but gone.
This isn't the first time GAME has faced such a crisis. In 2012, it entered administration, leading to the closure of hundreds of stores and thousands of job losses. The situation was exacerbated by major game publishers withholding stock, notably the highly anticipated Mass Effect 3. Private equity firm OpCapita stepped in, but the subsequent sale to Frasers Group in 2019 marked a shift towards concession stores, the end of pre-owned game sales, and the closure of the Basingstoke Head Office.
But here's where it gets controversial: is there any hope for GAME's revival? While the odds seem stacked against it, could it rise from the ashes and become a thriving specialized retailer with unique physical games? It's a long shot, but some fans are holding out hope.
